Linkin Park Continuing “Download” For Haiti As Long As Needed

Linkin Park isn’t finished with their “Download To Donate” fundraising project.  While fans are now getting their first batch of songs in return for their donations to the Haitian relief effort, the band’s Mike Shinoda says the transaction is ongoing.  He explains that those who’ve already contributed will be notified about updates.
Shinoda adds that more tracks will be forthcoming, noting, quote, “We have at least three more tracks confirmed and we’re getting more as people hear about it.”  The emcee explains that their goal is to keep “Download To Donate” going as long as the people in Haiti need help, so there could be more tracks surfacing throughout the year—or even longer.  He admits he’s also hoping that as artists continue to be generous with their music, the fans will continue to be generous with their money.

Kasabian Drummer Injured At Shockwaves NME Awards

Kasabian’s experience at this week’s Shockwaves NME Awards wasn’t entirely a good one.  While the band captured two awards at the event, “The Daily Mirror” reports that moments after the group the band began its performance during the ceremony drummer Ian Matthews toppled over, breaking his hand in the fall.  Guitarist Sergio Pizzorno told the paper, quote, “We had to get our drum technician Loz in at the last minute.  He doesn’t even know the songs, we just told him to go for it.”  Kasabian earned two trophies at the fan-voted event, getting the nod for Best Album and Best Album Artwork for the CD “West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum.”  The Shockwaves NME Awards were presented in London Wednesday night.

Muse Want Memorable Glastonbury Performance, But Not Like Italian TV

Muse wants to make their performance at the UK Glastonbury Festival a memorable experience.  Singer Matt Bellamy tells NME Radio, quote, “We’re hoping to do something a bit unusual there.  A little collaboration with someone, maybe get Bono to come and sing a song.  I’m not sure if he’ll be hanging around for that, but I’ll ask him anyway.”  U2 will be the headliner on June 25th, the night before Muse performs.  Last fall Muse was an opener on U2’s North American tour.
But Muse doesn’t plan to repeat their other rather unique performance.  For an appearance on an Italian program band members switched instruments after being asked to lip synch their hit “Uprising.”  Bellamy notes it was fun, but tells XMF they don’t intend to trade places again in the future.  He admits he simply cannot play the drums, and confesses that drummer Dominic Howard, quote, “makes a better frontman and I make a better drummer in terms of the way we look.  Obviously when it comes to playing it’s a different story.”

Sublime Adds Rome To Create New Name

Sublime has a new name.  The group was barred from legally using their original name after the death of singer/founder Bradley Nowell, so they’ve found a new moniker that links their past and their future.  Now called Sublime With Rome, the name was inspired by their new frontman, Rome Ramirez, who completes the trio with drummer Bud Gaugh and bassist Eric Wilson.  The band is planning to tour this spring.  Gaugh tells Billboard.com, quote, “I can’t wait to get this show on the road.  Rome has got a great personality and a good vibe, and he’s really humble and a real fun person to be around—and a great musician.  Once we got things together and things were working out good, we were like, ‘Alright, let’s go.’”
So far, Sublime With Rome has seven shows scheduled.  Stops include Los Angeles on April 20th, San Francisco on April 23rd, Denver on April 26th, Chicago on April 28th, New York on May 1st, Washington, DC on May 3rd, and Philadelphia on May 5th.  All parties involved in the dispute over the Sublime name are reportedly fine with Sublime With Rome as the band’s moniker, and a new website has been launched at http://www.sublimewithrome.com.

Radiohead’s Thom Yorke Names His Other Group

It’s time to drop those question marks from Thom Yorke’s name on the Coachella posters.  The Radiohead frontman has given a name to the outfit he performed with last fall—and will work with again this spring.  The band, which also features Flea, Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker, and Mauro Refosco, is called Atoms For Peace.  Yorke says the moniker was “bleedin’ obvious” in a posting on the Radiohead website, noting it’s also a song title from Yorke’s solo album, “The Eraser.”  Atoms For Peace will play a brief tour in April with support from Flying Lotus.  The band will kick off the trek with two shows in New York on April 5th and 6th.
They’ll also visit Boston on April 8th, Chicago on April 10th and 11th, Oakland, California on April 14th and 15th, and Santa Barbara, California on April 17th, before wrapping up the road trip at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California on April 18th.

Public Image LTD Plan North American Tour

Public Image LTD is bringing their reunion to the U.S.  The British band has a 17-date spring trek on the horizon.  The group, led by frontman John Lydon—a.k.a. Johnny Rotten, will launch the road trip with an appearance at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California on April 16th.  The tour also includes a two-night stand in Boston.  The upcoming trek will mark the first PiL shows on these shores in 18 years.
Lydon formed Public Image LTD back in 1978, after The Sex Pistols fell apart.  PiL was together for nearly 15 years, splitting up in 1992.  The band got back together last year, in conjunction with the reissue of their 1979 album “Metal Box.”  PiL went on a UK tour last fall in support of the release.  At that time Lydon said the group would stay together beyond the tour and record a new album if their road work received a strong response and brought in enough money to finance a studio project.

Godsmack Discuss “Crying” Inspiration

Godsmack is channeling frustration into a new single.  The group’s first offering from the upcoming album “The Oracle” is “Crying Like A Bitch.”  Frontman Sully Erna says it’s a very strong song.
Erna is reluctant to say specifically who the song is about, quote, “because I don’t want to throw anyone under the bus.”  He notes, quote, “It was more about just being fed up with prima donnas and certain rock stars in this industry that still feel they can push people around and are still relevant even though its been about 20 years since they’ve had their big moment.”  But the singer admits one particular person gave him the idea for the song.  He explains that it grew out of hearing this person whine about certain things, which got on his nerves.  But he’s not necessarily complaining.  Erna laughs as he adds, quote, “It’s a great song so I appreciate those people being the way they are.  It helps inspire me.”  Godsmack’s “The Oracle” is due in stores May 4th.

Silversun Pickups Share Challenge Of “The Royal We”

Silversun Pickups are ready with their next single, “The Royal We.”  Singer Brian Aubert says he’s glad the track is getting some recognition, noting it’s one of his favorites.  He says he likes it in part because of how it challenged the band.
Aubert notes that once they completed the song they really felt like they had accomplished something, and were proud of their efforts.  He adds that at one point the group even considered using “The Royal We” as the lead-off single from their latest CD, “Swoon.”  Instead, it’s the fourth release from the disc, following “Substitution,” “There’s No Secrets This Year,” and “Panic Switch.”

The Walkmen Tap Elvis For Inspiration

The Walkmen are winding down recording sessions for their next album, and are finding inspiration in the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.  Frontman Hamilton Leithauser tells Pitchfork.com, quote, “There is a lot of stuff that’s Elvis-sounding, like early Elvis and Sun Records kind of sounds.”  He explains, quote, “We have just so many eight-tracks over the last year, the list is unbelievable.  The instrumentation is very simple and then there’s a very loud vocal and a softish drum.  There is a slapback guitar on everything.”  The singer adds, quote, “I don’t know if it will end up being used at all, but I think that was a starting point for a lot of stuff that Paul [Maroon] looped with guitar.”  The Walkmen are working on a final batch of songs and will then slim down the track listing and pick a title for the release.  The new album will be the group’s sixth studio effort, and their follow up to 2008’s “You & Me.”

Slash Comments On Fergie Record

Slash is clearing up comments about working on a Fergie record.  The guitarist, who nabbed the Black Eyed Peas singer for a guest spot on his solo record, tells VH1 that remarks about Fergie doing a rock record were meant as vague as possible.  He explains, quote, “I mentioned that she wants to do a rock album at one point.  That’s all it was.  I don’t know when she’s gonna do it or anything like that, but we talked about working together on it when she does it.  But when I say that, I mean that in the vaguest way.  If she does it, I would love to do it with her.”

Switchfoot’s Foreman helping Haiti

Switchfoot’s Jon Foreman is on board for this weekend’s fundraiser for relief efforts in Haiti.  The rocker is among the performers taking part in the “Help Haiti Live” show taking place in Nashville Saturday night.  Net proceeds from the benefit will go to Compassion International’s Haiti disaster relief fund.

New STP album

Details are surfacing about the upcoming Stone Temple Pilots album.  The band’s new, self-titled disc is slated for release on May 25th.  The 12-track effort is STP’s first album in nine years.  The first listening party for the album, which will be released by Atlantic Records, took place in New York earlier this week.

Saving Abel Discuss USO Tour - (Corey’s note: who cares?)

Saving Abel is taking part in a series of USO shows for America’s servicemen and women in the Persian Gulf.  The group say of the trip, quote, “The safety, well-being and happiness of our nation’s troops have always been close to our hearts.  And what better way to show them we care than by traveling to the Persian Gulf on a USO tour and rocking out America’s soldiers.”  They add, quote, “The USO has a rich history of delivering a touch of home to our men and women in uniform, and Saving Abel is honored to be part of that legacy.  We couldn’t do what we do everyday without them and we are forever grateful.”  Singer Jared Weeks notes the band always makes sure people know they support the troops.  He explains, quote, “They do so much for us, they deserve to be recognized.  We have these freedoms because of what they do.”  One of Saving Abel’s concerts will be streamed online.  More information on the trek is available at http://www.ustream.tv/savingabel and

Courtney Love Reflects On John Mayer

Courtney Love is chiming in on John Mayer’s recent “Playboy” interview.  In recent Twitter postings, Love uses many obscenities to say she would never stoop to having a relationship with the singer-songriter, and would likely punch him in the face if given the chance.  She tweeted, quote, “at least John Mayer finally has a bigger gob than me, hell he makes me wanna go gay 4 Jessica Simpson.”  She also mused about having, quote, “spite hate” sex with Mayer, quote, “just to put him in his place,” adding, quote, “hes a better guitarist than me, but not better in bed!”  Staying with the idea of having sex with Mayer, the rocker suggests, quote, “totally throwing him around the room in bits and then you just BAM punch him in the face? good times.”
However, Love also admits she hasn’t always been the most savvy regarding her comments about others, confessing she’s, quote, “said far stupider” things “about my alist bfs tho ive been discreet. but about rockers i spill the beans.”

Alice In Chains Staging More Dynamic Shows

Alice In Chains is selling out shows across the country and with the band’s return to the concert trail comes a new approach.  Drummer Sean Kinney notes that singer William DuVall, guitarist Jerry Cantrell, and bassist Mike Starr are moving around a lot more on stage, and putting on more of a show for the audience—who can’t change their viewpoint.
In addition, both DuVall and Cantrell lend their vocals to the shows and they both take center stage when delivering a vocal part.  DuVall adds, quote, “The show is getting a bit more bigger and more elaborate and we’re excited about that, so we’re just trying to maximize that potential and keep it interesting for ourselves and the people coming.”  Alice In Chains is on tour supporting their latest album “Black Gives Way to Blue”—the group’s first full studio effort in 14 years and their first with DuVall.  The band will be performing in Atlanta, Georgia Thursday night.

Depeche Mode Wraps Its “Tour Of The Universe”

Depeche Mode is wrapping up its “Tour Of The Universe” this weekend.  The English new wave band will play two dates at Dusseldorf Esprit Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany starting tomorrow night.  This weekend’s shows are make-goods for concerts rescheduled from last June.  The band had to postpone the shows after lead singer Dave Gahan became ill.  Doctors discovered he had a low-grade malignant tumor in his bladder, which he had surgically removed.  While the operation was a success, Gahan needed several weeks to recover.  The rockers’ trek launched in May 2009 and included dates in Paris, Madrid, Geneva, various North American shows, and more.
In related news, the band wrapped up an auction yesterday to benefit charity.  Depeche Mode partnered with Hubolt to create collectors’ edition watches bearing album artwork from the band’s catalog.  Proceeds from the sales of the unique time pieces will benefit Teenage Cancer Trust, an organization devoted to improving the lives of teens and young adults with cancer in the UK.

Pennywise Expects Full Participation From New Singer

The members of Pennywise note they’re happy with their new lead singer.  The band recently announced that Zoli Teglas, who was tapped to fill in following last year’s departure of longtime frontman Jim Lindberg, is now a permanent member of the group.  Pennywise guitarist Fletcher Dragge notes that in their search for a vocalist they didn’t want someone who would be argumentative and create friction, but they weren’t seeking a “yes man,” either.
Pennywise is currently working on their next album, which will be their first with Teglas.  In addition, the group will be hitting the road this spring.  The band will launch a European tour in Belgium in April.  In advance of the overseas dates, Pennywise has a few shows next month in California and Nevada.

Pennywise U.S. Tour Dates

March 17 - San Diego, California, at the House of Blues
March 18 - Ventura, California, at the Majestic Ventura Theater
March 19 - Chico, California, at the Senator Theater
March 20 - Reno, Nevada, at the Grand Sierra Resort Theater

INXS Updating Old Songs

INXS is working on new music that will likely sound familiar to their fans.  That’s because they’re remaking their old music a makeover, with new arrangements and some top modern rockers singing on them.  RollingStone.com reports that The Killers’ Brandon Flowers lends his voice to “Beautiful Girl,” Rob Thomas tackles “Original Sin,” and Ben Harper completes “Devil Inside,” while Nikka Costa and Tricky contribute to the project as well.  INXS drummer Jon Farriss says, quote, “Everyone who sings on the stuff has their own style, their own take on things, and that’s why it’s so wonderful.”  Farriss looks at the disc, due this fall, as a transitional one.  He adds that INXS has plans to record an original album in the future.

Drummer Mike Portnoy Shares Avenged Sevenfold Experience

Mike Portnoy is calling his efforts with Avenged Sevenfold “an amazing and emotional experience.”  The band tapped the Dream Theater drummer to help them finish their album following the death of drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, who passed away in December.  Portnoy discusses his time with the band in a posting, noting that he and guitarist Zacky Vengeance, quote, “celebrated by getting matching Death Bat tats here in the studio,” and that he went with singer M. Shadows, quote, “when he got a new Death Bat tat with Jimmy’s face.”  He adds, quote, “I must thank the amazing Avenged Sevenfold fans for being so open and welcoming to me.  I was fearing them being very defensive over The Rev’s drum throne, but they’ve all been so supportive, open-minded, understanding and excited by the news…It is a huge relief to me and the guys.”
Portnoy says he now feels like brothers for life with Avenged Sevenfold, and hopes this isn’t the last time he’s asked to play with them.  The drummer also shares his belief that, quote, “The album is gonna be incredible!,” and that The Rev would be very pleased.

Muse Upset At Label Over Free Streaming Ban

Muse is not exactly happy with their label after Warner Music halted the streaming of music on free services like Spotify and We 7.  Bassist Chris Wolstenholme tells BBC’s “Newsbeat” program, quote, “It’s like taking your song off the radio, isn’t it?  The corporations are setting the rules on these things because they’re clutching at straws.  They’ve lost so much money on record sales because of the Internet…As far as bands are concerned, you just want people to hear your music whichever way they can.”  Muse is doing well at attracting fans—especially in the UK.  The group was just named Best British Band at the 2010 Shockwaves NME Awards, which took place in London Wednesday night.

The Soft Pack Gets Solid Through Experimentation

The guys in The Soft Pack say they’ve really become a solid band.  Bassist David Lantzman says the group started hitting its stride toward the end of making their first album, when they started experimenting.
The Soft Pack just released their self-titled debut CD this month.  The band is on a European tour in support of the album.  The Soft Pack is currently in the UK, and will be performing in Leeds, England Thursday night.

Korn Bassist Getting Back To “Bassics”

Korn bassist Fieldy is a busy guy.  The band is building up to a new album release, and during his downtime he’s been working on a side group called Stillwell as well as his own solo record, “Bassically.”  Discussing the album, Fieldy tells Noisecreep.com, quote, “I’d say it’s like a jazz fusion funk type of thing.  Real new age, too.  Different kind of music.”  He notes it’s something he’s “always wanted to do,” explaining, quote, “When I was younger, learning bass, I listened to a lot of bass albums—Stanley Clarke, I grew up listening to that type of stuff.”
Fieldy cautions fans that it’s not going to be a metal offering.  He adds, quote, “I don’t want people to get it and think, ‘Man, I can’t believe I bought this crap.’  It’s not meant to be heavy.  If you like heavy and are not open-minded, you will not like this.”  The album was a labor of love for the bassist, who says he tried out lead and rhythm bass parts, as well as 15-string bass, stand-up bass and fretless bass during sessions.  Fieldy’s “Bassically” is expected later this year.

Pete Wentz Helping UNICEF With Water Awareness Campaign

Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz continues to lend his celebrity to backing UNICEF’s efforts for clean drinking water.  The bassist was named the national spokesperson for the 2010 UNICEF Tap Project, a four-year-old initiative that is targeting the upcoming World Water Week 2010 to raise awareness and donations for the cause.  Wentz says, quote, “Water is something that we as Americans often take for granted, but the reality is, the lack of clean and accessible drinking water kills 41-hundred children under the age of five every day and as a new father I have become highly attuned to the needs of children everywhere.”
As part of the campaign, individuals are being asked to donate a dollar or more for tap water at participating restaurants to provide clean water to children around the world.  World Water Week 2010 runs from March 21st through the 27th.  For more information, or to register as a volunteer, visit http://www.tapproject.org.

Rockers Contribute To Haiti Relief Compilation

Angels & Airwaves Planning Multiple Tours Behind “Love”

Angels & Airwaves singer Tom DeLonge is ready to rack up the miles in support of the band’s new multimedia project “Love.”  The vocalist tells Billboard.com, quote, “There’ll be a couple different tours on this record.  This first one is promotion for the launch of the album.  The second tour will come out after the movie goes theatrical, and that will be the big tour where we basically couple everything together.”  DeLonge says he’s excited about the first tour—the Love Spring trek 2010—noting it’s giving the band an opportunity to perform in theater-sized venues.  He adds that the sets will also feature some of the group’s older material.
The Love Spring 2010 tour will begin with Angels & Airwaves’ appearance at Bamboozle Left in Anaheim, California on March 27th.  Say Anything is on board for most shows on the 40-date trek.

AC/DC Shatters U2’s Aussie Venue Record

AC/DC has outdone U2 to become the biggest outdoor band in Australia.  “The Daily Telegraph’s” Sydney Confidential reports that as of February 22nd, the band had sold 212-thousand-729 tickets for three shows at ANZ Stadium in Sydney.  That bests U2’s Vertigo Tour in 2006, which garnered 211-thousand-747 tickets for the same venue.  The gross for AC/DC’s run in—in the group’s country of origin—is expected to exceed 25-million Australian dollars.  In addition, the band is expected to pick up another four-million in merchandise sales.  That’s roughly 25-point-eight-million U.S. dollars total.
AC/DC has become one of the biggest employers in the concert biz.  The veteran rockers use 500 security, ushers, and service staff at each concert.  The band also has over 100 staff members who travel with the band, supervising the production of their shows.

Coldplay Taking Extreme Measures Against Leaks

Coldplay is taking all precautions to make sure their album doesn’t leak early.  The band is even limiting their own access to the material.  Singer Chris Martin tells NME.com, quote, “There’s only two people in the whole building who know how to open all the recording files.  Even we don’t know how to do it.  We couldn’t even steal our own music at the moment.  You would have to be a computer genius and a great burglar to get into the building and download it and mix it.”  Coldplay is tentatively anticipating having their next album in stores toward the end of this year, but no firm release date has been set.  The group is working on the follow up to their 2008 effort, “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends.”

OK Go Credit Producer For Helping Band Find Its Sound

OK Go is currently hitting with the single “This Too Shall Pass.”  Singer Damian Kulash says the song needed very little tinkering to get to its current state.  Band members credit producer Dave Fridmann for helping the band capture the sound they were seeking on the song.  Kulash notes Fridmann’s talents lie in his ability to bring out the best in the groups he works with.
Bassist Tim Nordwind came up with the initial music for “This Too Shall Pass.”  He recalls the demo for the song, quote, “felt very huge to me.  That beat felt big and pounding.”  Nordwind notes that Fridmann found a way to keep the song’s original structure while making it, quote, “pound even harder.”  Kulash adds that Fridmann was instrumental in helping the band capture the sound they wanted for all the songs for their latest CD, “Of the Blue Colour of the Sky.”  “This Too Shall Pass,” as well as OK Go’s previous singles “Back from Kathmandu” and “WTF,” are on the album.

Bullet For My Valentine Shooting Two New Videos

Welsh rockers Bullet For My Valentine are making the most of their current trip to Los Angeles.  The group is in town to shoot a pair of videos for tracks from their upcoming album, “Fever.”  One clip is for the new single “Your Betrayal,” while the other is for the track “The Last Fight.”  Director P.R. Brown is handling both shoots.  Fans will be able to catch Bullet For My Valentine’s “Fever” on April 27th.

Airborn Toxic Event Mourning Songwriter William Garvey

Airborne Toxic Event is mourning the death of songwriter William Garvey, the man who penned the track “Goodbye Horses” for Q Lazzarus.  The group had been covering the song, perhaps known as the Buffalo Bill dance track from the film “Silence Of The Lambs,” when they first heard from Garvey.  It turns out he wasn’t a fan of their version.  Airborne Toxic Event singer Mikel Jollett tells Spinner.com Garvey e-mailed him about the track, and said he was upset that Jollett was getting the words wrong.  Jollett says in his e-mail reply he explained that he simply misheard the lyrics and couldn’t find an accurate lyric sheet for the song, and promised future renditions would be correct.
The vocalist says that over time, Garvey warmed to the band and they developed a friendship, and, quote, “when he died it was really visceral to me.”  Jollett adds that “Goodbye Horses” has become a fan favorite and Airborn Toxic Event is considering recording the song for their next record.

Travis Barker Gives His Side In Alleged Paparazzi Incident

Blink-182’s Travis Barker is using Twitter to give his side regarding the recent incident in which he allegedly threatened a photographer, stole his cell phone, and slashed his tires.  In a series of tweets the rocker says he was outnumbered by the paparazzi as he left a restaurant with his two children and he later returned to appeal to them to stop taking photos of his family.  He explains, quote, “When I’m out at breakfast at 8am in the morning the last thing i appreciate is some photographer threatening me 2 a fight while he’s 3 deep.”  Barker continues, quote, “When i defend myself/my kids that don’t make me a tough guy .I was outnumbered and threatened so i did what any man would.”  He also notes, quote, “Paparazzi cried like young girls when it was no longer 3 of them against me and my kids. Didn’t they remember threatening me an hr ago??”  The rocker also questions, quote, “What happened to the tough guys with the cameras? It was gonna be a fair
fight..3 against 3? I mean i weigh a buck 40, your 200lbs and 6’6.”
Barker suggests photographers stick to the red carpets, and only take pictures of “hungry hollywood starlets” and others who are out at clubs seeking such publicity, adding, quote, “I don’t . I’m not a socialite out begging for that kind of attention. I’m a family man out wit my kids. Don’t get the 2 twisted.”  He adds that the video of the incident, which was posted on TMZ.com, doesn’t really tell the story, claiming, quote, “of course all the footage these lames released to the press is one sided cause they edited it.”

Rob Zombie Talks Television

Rob Zombie is excited about his latest venture behind the camera.  The rocker-director turned his attention to TV, and lent his skills to an upcoming episode of the hit CBS series “CSI: Miami.”  He tells “The New York Daily News,” quote, “I wanted to see what it was like.  Other TV offers have come up in the past, but I never really went after them because I wasn’t sure I really wanted to do TV.  It’s so different from making a movie because you go into this established situation that sometimes has been going on for years and years.”  Zombie’s episode of “CSI: Miami” airs on CBS next Monday, March 1st.
As a director, Zombie has several films to his credit, including 2003’s “House of 1000 Corpses,” 2005’s “The Devil’s Rejects,” the 2007 “Halloween” remake, and last year’s follow up, “Halloween 2.”

Rob Zombie-Alice Cooper “The Gruesome Twosome Tour” Dates

Rocker turned horror director Rob Zombie and the original shock rocker Alice Cooper are planning a brief trek together under the moniker “The Gruesome Twosome Tour.”  Zombie says, quote, “The dream or nightmare comes true!  Me and The Coop have been talking about touring together for about 15 years and finally the moment is here.  This will be without a doubt a rock ‘n’ roll spooktacular for all the cool ghouls.”  Cooper adds, quote, “I’m looking forward to these concerts with Rob.  It’s sort of like Dracula vs. Frankenstein, we’re like this generation’s classic monsters.  When we’re not onstage frightening audiences, we’ll be backstage trying to scare each other.”  Zombie and Cooper’s “The Gruesome Twosome Tour” is primarily set for north of the border.  The seven-date trek begins April 26th in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  The only U.S. stops include Kennewick, Washington on May 2nd and Casper, Wyoming on May 4th.

U2 Names Openers For North American Summer Tour

U2 is starting to get details in order for their next batch of North American dates, including naming the support acts.  Lenny Kravitz will open June dates when the band relaunches their “360 Tour.”  He’s set for the kick off show in Salt Lake City on June 3rd, as well as the two-night stand in Anaheim, California on June 6th and 7th, and the Denver stop on June 12th.  The Fray take over starting in Oakland, California on June 16th, and also appear with U2 in Seattle and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.  Interpol has the next six concerts, starting in Minneapolis on June 27th.  The North American portion of U2’s trek continues through mid July.

Alice In Chains Discuss “Your Decision”

Alice In Chains are currently on to “Your Decision” as the latest single from their 2009 album “Black Gives Way To Blue.”  Singer William DuVall says the track is one of the more personal songs on the disc.
The vocalist adds that he enjoyed putting together the track in the studio and the challenge of the complexities of getting intertwining guitar parts with Jerry Cantrell on the song.  “Black Gives Way to Blue” is Alice In Chain’s first full studio effort in 14 years, and their first with DuVall.

Hockey Discuss New Video

Hockey has a new video for the single “Song Away.”  Singer Ben Grubin tells Spinner.com that the clip came together almost by fate.  He explains, quote, “One morning, after a show at The Echo the night before, we woke up at 5:00 a.m. to record a song in the L.A. River.  At the end of the day, we realized we had recorded a video instead.”  The new clip now takes focus from their former video, which featured actors Paul Rust and Charlyne Yi.  Hockey’s “Song Away” video can be seen online at video.aol.com/aolvideo/AOL Music/song-away-new-version/67117492001.

Slash Solo Work Not The End Of Velvet Revolver

Slash has one of the more anticipated rock releases this year, but the guitarist says this doesn’t mean he’s moving on from Velvet Revolver.  He tells RollingStone.com that once he’s finished touring in support of his self-titled release, Velvet Revolver intends to resume their search for a new frontman.  Regarding the search for a vocalist, Slash notes, quote, “We did listen to a lot of singers, but there hasn’t been anybody that’s going to be the guy so far.”  The guitarist says he doesn’t think their next frontman will be anyone nearly as famous as ex-vocalist Scott Weiland—and he’s glad for that.  He explains, quote, “It’s really hard to do something with a voice that’s already really well known in an original band.  We want someone who is really good that hasn’t been recognized by the whole country as being amazing, but somebody who is just on the precipice of being discovered.”  Slash’s solo album is expected in April.

Stone Temple Pilots Making Plans

Stone Temple Pilots are moving closer to a new album step-by-step.  Singer Scott Weiland tells Spinner.com the band’s plans, noting, quote, “We just finished mastering our new album, and we’ll be playing South By Southwest in March, with a few more dates.  And then we go to Europe to play all the big festivals in the early summer.  Then we’ll come back with our own festival we’re putting together.”  Although a firm release date has not been announced, the month of May has been rumored as a potential release period for STP’s new CD.

New Coldplay Album Might Not Surface This Year

Coldplay is working toward new music, but a once-discussed deadline of late 2010 is no longer a strict rule.  Singer Chris Martin told Globo.com he wants to put the new album out, quote, “hopefully this Christmas,” but nothing is set in stone.  He adds that this likely won’t be their last release through EMI, explaining, quote, “I think we have about 500 more.  No, seriously, we signed for a lot.”  Coldplay has been with EMI since the start of their career.  The group’s upcoming album will be their follow up to 2008’s “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends.”

Rockers Contribute To New Cypress Hill CD

A number of rockers are contributing to the upcoming album from Cypress Hill.  Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello is featured on the title track to “Rise Up,” while Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda appears on and produced the song “Carry Me Away.”  In addition, System Of Down’s Daron Malakian guests on and produced the song “Trouble Seeker,” while Everlast drops by for the track “Day Destroys The Night” and Marc Anthony and Pitbull lends their vocals to the hip-hop flavored single “Armada Latina.”  Young De, Evidence, The Alchemist, and Cheech & Chong also turn up on the album.  Cypress Hill’s “Rise Up” arrives in stores April 6th.

Neon Trees Show Pop Side With “Animal”

Neon Trees are a rock band, but even they admit that their current single, “Animal” is about as poppy a song as they have in their repertoire.  Bassist Branden Campbell says he appreciates the group’s variety, noting that with singer-drummer Elaine Bradley they can really experiment vocally and give each track what it needs.
Singer Tyler Glenn adds that Neon Trees isn’t, quote, “scared of pop music.”  Regarding “Animal” he says, quote, “I think the melody when we were listening to it kind of evoked that kind of doo-woppy thing, but we didn’t want to go that route cause we wanted to keep it true to the band’s sound.”  Glenn also notes it’s one of the few songs that contains a sample combined with a live drum track, and they felt that “Animal” was a song worth the experimenting.  “Animal” is the lead-off single from Neon Trees’ upcoming debut album, “Habits,” which is due in stores March 16th.

Social Distortion Hits Rewind

Recording is underway on Social Distortion’s new album, and singer Mike Ness says the process takes him back to their early days.  He tells Spinner.com, quote, “We’re recording it really old-school.  We went back to tape, old compressors and old microphones, just really trying to fight modern technology as much as possible.”  Ness says the album reminds him of the 1992 disc, “Somewhere Between Heaven And Hell,” but also has elements of New York ‘70s punk.  He adds, quote, “It’s a little more Johnny Thunders.  Some of the early first wave of punk was very blues-based rock ‘n’ roll, but it had this urban snottiness to it.”  He’s also been quoted as saying the album is “The Dead Boys meets The Black Crowes.”  The still-untitled set is expected later this year.

KoRn’s Fiedly Picks Up Guitar For Stillwell Project

Fieldy is known as one of the top hard rock bassists going, but for his latest project, the KoRn musician is picking up another instrument.  Fieldy says he’s playing more guitar on his metal-leaning Stillwell project.  He tells Noisecreep.com, quote, “I play more guitar than bass these days.  I wasn’t even quite sure what I wanted to do when we started out.  In the beginning, we were going to get a bunch of crazy guitar players together.”  As time went on, Fieldy says he found himself playing the guitar riffs and melodies when working out tracks.  He says, quote, “I was playing guitar for like six hours a day, a lot of guitar, so I said, ‘You know what, I’m going to be the guitar player.’”  The group is finalizing release details on their new album “Surrounded By Liars.”  As for the sound, he explains, quote, “It’s heavy, but not heavy like KoRn.  We came up with a title for the music.  It’s called street metal.  It’s our version of metal.  I don’t
know, it’s just not straightforward metal.”

Nikki Sixx Gives Sixx AM Progress Report

Nikki Sixx says that things are progressing very well on the new Sixx: AM album.  The bassist says in a new posting, quote, “Some very Sixx: AM left turns on this album.  I don’t remember laughing this much in the studio in a long time.  I imagine there is over two albums worth of material written, but just like last time, it will probably be a single album.  The cream always rises to the top, no filler allowed.”  Even with more than enough material, the group continues to write and record for their sophomore set.  The still-untitled album is tentatively expected before the end of the year.

Puscifer Builds To Touring

Maynard James Keenan is planning more touring for his Puscifer project, which continues to support their 2007 full-length debut and last year’s EP.  Keenan says there’s a reason for the slow build.  He tells Billboard.com, quote, “We needed enough people to start hearing about it so when we actually took it on the road we could afford it.  A show like this needs gas in the gas tank.  You can’t just do a show.  We are truly independent.”  Keenan says that Puscifer has remained void of financial tour backing from a label, publishers, underwriters, and merchandisers.  He adds, “There’s no money, so we had to build this thing on our own from the ground up.  It’s an investment in time and money.”  After making several West Coast runs, Puscifer will tackle shows in the East and Midwest, bringing their combination of music, sketch comedy, and multimedia for audiences.

Teglas Talks Pennywise

Zoli Teglas is the new frontman for Pennywise and the vocalist says things are moving along in the post-Jim Lindberg era.  Teglas tells LifeInABungalo.com, quote, “We have 15 tracks demoed and we just finished another today.  At first we were going to try to put out an album and then go on tour, but we decided to go on the road first.  Touring helps me get molded a little more to their live show and the writing process.”  Teglas came to the group from Ignite and he adds that he still intends on doing another record with the band, though his current focus is on Pennywise.  He adds that with touring on the horizon with Pennywise, he expects to have plenty of time to write on the road.

Broken Social Scene Completes “Rock Record”

Broken Social Scene now has a title for their new album.  The disc, titled “Forgiveness Rock Record,” is due May 4th.  As previously reported, the group returns as a six-piece, though several members of the extended family make guest appearances.  The disc features cameos by Feist; Stars’ Amy Milan and Evan Cranley; Metric’s Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw; Do Make Say Think’s Ohad Benchetrit; Julie Penner; Raising The Fawn’s John Crossingham; Pavement’s Scott Kannberg; Sebastien Grainger; Tortoise’s John McCentrie and Doug McCombs; and The Weakerthans’ Jason Tait.  The group returns to the road next month, beginning with their Harvest Of Hope Festival appearance March 14th in St. Augustine, Florida.

More Punk Bowlers Head To Vegas

The worlds of punk rock and bowling are crossing paths for the twelfth time in Las Vegas this spring.  The annual Punk Rock Bowling & Music Festival continues to expand with the addition of new guests Against Me!, Me First And The Gimme Gimmes, TSOL, Adolescents, Filthy Thieving Bastards, and Stretch Marks.  They join the previously announced Flogging Molly, NOFX, Youth Brigade, F***ed Up, and The Revival Tour.  This year’s event takes place May 6th through 9th at Las Vegas’ Sunset Station Hotel & Casino.  Early Bird Special Weekend Passes go on sale today at PunkRockBowling.com.

The Pixies Are After The Almighty Dollar

The Pixies reunion has been a financially fruitful one for the band, and singer Black Francis admits the almighty dollar wins out over art for the group these days.  He tells “The Quietus,” quote, “[It] ain’t about art anymore.  We’re interested in anything that’s going to earn us a fair wage.  It’s not to say it’s not about art, but we made that art…20 years ago.  So forget the…art.  This ain’t about the art anymore.  I did the arty farty part.  Now it’s time to talk about the money.”  Francis has expressed a desire to work on new music with the group, and they did complete one track during the initial dates, but so far the rest of the band has resisted the temptation to record fresh music.

The Stooges Set To Promote “Raw Power” Re-Release

Iggy Pop and The Stooges are gearing up for what the singer says will be a three-year cycle.  The group, who rebounded from the death of guitarist Ron Asheton by reuniting with former guitarist James Wiliamson, will spend the next phase of their career promoting the expanded re-release of the 1973 classic “Raw Power.”  Pop tells Billboard.com, quote, “We’ll give it a good, sharp poke for the next three years and then step back and see where we are, see what we can do with it after that.  After that we should step back and pick our shots once in a while.  Hopefully we can be like something that convenes for certain occasions.”  Three is a key number for the band, as Pop says not only does he expect a three-year cycle, but also a tour of no more than three months this year.  At present, only the All Tomorrow’s Parties event in Monticello, New York stands as one of the few U.S. dates on their schedule.  The vocalist says so far they have received better
offers from other countries, but will eventually tour in the States.

Fans Asked To “Wear Black For Johnny Cash”

This Friday marks what would have been Johnny Cash’s 78th birthday and the singer’s friends are rallying fans for a major celebration.  They are encouraging people to wear black on February 26th to mark Cash’s birthday and are asking for help to spread the word.  Those with websites are asked to post “Wear Black For Johnny” information on their website, and those with Facebook accounts can attend “Johnny Cash’s 78th Birthday” event.  You can also post information about Cash on your wall, upload photos of yourself wearing black, invite your friends to join in and email or tweet your participation.  The celebration coincides with the release this week of Cash’s final album, “American VI: Ain’t No Grave.”

Nickelback Beaten By A Pickle

There’s a new name to watch out for and it’s not a band or a singer.  It’s a pickle.  That’s right—a pickle.  There was a recent movement on Facebook asking if a pickle could earn more fans than perennial chart-toppers and critical lightning rod band Nickelback.  The challenge started February 3rd, and by Friday, February 17th, the pickle finally surpassed the band with one-million-416-thousand fans to Nickelback’s one-million414-thousand.  It looks as though the pickle will stay indie, as it’s not signed with a label as of yet.

Hawkins Still Riding Coattails

With Them Crooked Vultures going strong, Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins is reactivating his side band, Taylor Hawkins And The Coattail Riders, for a new album.  The group is polishing off “Red Light Fever” for a mid-April release.  The album features guest turns from Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor, Dave Grohl, and The Cars’ Elliot Easton.  Some of the featured tracks on the record include “Way Down,” “Not Bad Luck,” and “Hell To Pay.”

Cartel Begins Year With “Perfect Mistake”

The band Cartel is kicking off 2010 on a positive note.  Singer Will Pugh says in a posting that they will start the year by releasing “The Perfect Mistake” as their new single.  The song is expected to surface later this month.  Fans can also look forward to the band back on stage fairly soon.  They expect to reveal their first extended touring of 2010 in the coming weeks.
