Carlin Dies and Women Skate

Sadness and Rollersistahs!

I first remember hearing George Carlin at about 13.  I found an old cassette of my dad’s and listened to it after school when the ol’ man wasn’t home to bust me.  After I got over how funny hearing the f-word that many times you started to pick up ideas.  George wasn’t just being foul.  He had ideas.  George Carlin was a philosopher and a thinker.  Mr. Carlin pointed out how ridiculous we humans behave.  His marketing lullaby was a favorite, “a place for your stuff”, and let us not forget his Toledo Windowbox brand of...well...fun.  He taught me not to trust marketers nor the government.  I never really grasped how hypocritical the world is until I heard “Back In Town.” George Carlin was a linguist as well, poking fun at how little we think about the syllabus falling from our mouths.  When I was 19 my friends and I ended a 2 week road trip of the west coast by seeing George Carlin perform at Bally’s in Las Vegas and I have seen him 3 times since.  I don’t get how George Carlin can die along with his wit and verbal disobedience and George Bush is still running the show.  He also taught me my parents were not as innocent as I thought there were just by having his albums.

In happier news…

Notice the girl on the far right sticking her bum out.  What a temptress, rarrrr!

I went to see the Salt Lake Derby Girls take on the Hollywood Scarlets at the Olympic Oval in Kearns a couple weekends ago.  I didn’t know what to expect other than sexy ladies in tights skating and bumping asses.  The Bayou served brew and the commentary was great.  Where else are you going to hear, “...and Dirty Pirate Hooker scores five more points”?  If you don’t get the rules the refs fill you in during halftime. I am a skeptic by nature and wasn’t sure if I would have fun at all but I had a blast and there were a bunch of people there cheering the ladies on.  Way better than a movie and about the same price.

Their next match is June 28 (this Saturday).  Get tix by clicking here.

That is the update.

Corey -

I feel your pain on George.  It was the summer of 7th grade when I came across my step-dad’s “George Carlin - On the Road” tape.  I spent that summer seeing the world in a whole new light.  I even went as far as to do his Headlines bit for my theater class that next year.  Too bad George didn’t get his wish and get blown up.  “There he goes...”
