This is not pretty. Not at all.

Here is the lovely Justin Bieber Tshirt that you can win today on X96. It is from the Marci collection and looks much better on her than on me.

This is Happening by LCD Soundsystem

You have to admire a band that can take elements of 80s staples like Yaz, Depeche Mode, Stephen Tin Tin Duffy, and New Order and make them sound edgy and updated. That’s exactly what James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem has done with This is Happening. This album is dance-driven rock and roll, and is engineered to make your speakers swell up and explode with every perfectly timed beat. If you’ve been into alternative music long enough, you’ll be listening to the vocals on the track “One Touch” and you’ll think to yourself, my god, is this The Human League? It isn’t, of course, because The Human League would sound old fashioned next to LCD Soundsystem. Adding to the 80s feel is the fact that several tracks are over six minutes, which, to me, is very reminiscent of 12” single dance remixes that are as brilliant as what you’d get from New Order in 1986.  In fact, the album opens with the epic “Dance Yrself Clean” that opens with a faint drum rhythm to explode into an eight-minute raging, throbbing masterpiece. When listening to this song for the very first time, I quite literally jumped when the main beats kicked in.  And this brings me back to the production and engineering of the sound on this album. It rivals the Nine Inch Nails gems that were delivered by perfectionist Trent Reznor.  Buy this album, crank it up, and you’ll love the way it sounds. It was definitely produced and recorded for audiophiles.

Lyrically, the sarcastic and sardonic lines like “Every night’s a different story / it’s a 30-car pile up with you” and “Love is a curse shoved in a hearse / Love is an open book to a verse of your bad poetry / and this is coming from me” make every song stand out among a lot of what you hear on dance-oriented albums.

After listening to this album several times, I’m left to wonder if LCD Soundsystem quietly and unassumingly resurrected synth music.
