Our big crazy weekend special!
Share:Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 @ 12:05PM
It should be interesting.
Friday at 10 am, we’re kicking off our first ever Give Me 4 For The 4th weekend. We’ve been collecting 4-song play lists from listeners and now we’re frantically trying to make sure we have all of the different songs that have been submitted. I had to go down to the basement to track down some old Rancid and an old CD from The Sundays. Corey O’Brien has been digging around in his desk for Bright Eyes, Nine Inch Nails, Placebo, old Primus, and a few other goodies. Andypants has been working on lots of behind-the-scenes parts of this upcoming weekend special. It’s been quite a bit of effort, but we’re excited! Friday through Sunday 10 am to midnight we’re gonna feature a different play list at the top of the hour.
If you’re having a 4th of July picnic or BBQ, your fellow listeners of X96 will provide the music.

Movie review: AWAY WE GO.

Four stars!
We went to see the new Sam Mendes film “Away We Go” last night and I really liked it. First, the script is very strong—it almost has to be since it came from Dave Eggers (who wrote one of my favorite books “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius”) and his wife Vendela Vida. Although the show is ultimately sweet, there are several comedic moments, and several moments that elicit uncomfortable laughter. (When you go to the movie, the opening scene is a fine example of the latter.) Director Sam Mendes learned the art of making dark comedy in “American Beauty” and he follows it up nicely with this film. Excellent performances from John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph prove that these two are talented beyond what we’ve seen from them in their TV comedies.
This film is truly left of center and will make mainstream audiences squirm a little. But I loved it!

So, um, did you hear about that one guy?

I think it was on the news.
Oh my gosh, can you believe it? I can’t. It was all over the news last night and today. Everybody’s talking about it and they’re either creeped out or they’re sad…or both. But I just wanted to make sure you had heard about that one guy. The one on the news. Such a big story, it’s totally crazy.

Give Me 4 for the 4th!
Our first ever Give Me 4 for the 4th weekend will run July 3 to July 5. All three days (during the daytime) we will select a 4-song play list from X96 listeners and play them on the top of the hour. Got 4 songs you want to make us play? Then get signed up at http://www.x96.com as soon as possible. We hope this works…we haven’t tried it before. Hopefully we get some good play lists ... so submit one, please!

The title says it all.
This happened while completely sober in our motel room in Torrey on the night we arrived. It was starting to rain and everything in town was closed. This is what pure boredom and idiocy will bring you.

There's nothing like taking some time off!
I took last week off just to unwind a little bit after the Big Ass Show. Mostly I took naps, walked the dog, and watched it rain. I did manage a fishing trip on Thursday with my dad and my uncle Jim. We went to East Canyon where we had a mix of rain, blue skies, a massive thunderstorm, and then more decent weather. We did OK catching a few trout using nightcrawlers as bait, but I must confess my overall wussy-ness involving putting a big fat worm on a hook. Icky!
Who is more frightened in this picture? The fish or me?
After that, my wife and I went to Capitol Reef where it was mostly cold and rainy. We did go on a massive hike (see below) and take a few other photos in between rain storms.

The best hometown meal came from Lisa’s Country Kitchen in Nephi on the way down. I highly recommend it if you find yourself in Nephi.

Vacation next week!
I’m going to take off next week for some rest and relaxation. My wife and I are going to go to Capitol Reef for a few days. I’ve never been there, so I’m looking for suggestions on hikes and other activities in that area. If you’ve been there before, please let me know. Watch for a few pictures on my blog next week.

Today is my anniversary.
I wish I had a scanner at home for some of my old photos, but this is a crappy cell phone picture of our wedding picture. Despite the fact that it is blurry and low resolution, the best part of the photo is that you can clearly tell that we are, in fact, in an LDS cultural hall. It’s also awesome that Mrs. Nukey still has a place in her heart for a moody, insecure, cantankerous guy. I love you, honey!

My driver license expired 3 months ago.

Awesome!
My driver license expired on March 6, 2009. Fortunately it was pointed out to me not by a cop, but by a friendly teller at America First Credit Union when I was trying to get a cashier’s check. The sad thing is that I live less than a couple of miles from the driver license renewal building. I think I was busy planning the X96 Maverik Big Ass Show for the past few months. Time for me to check into the Tired Hospital.

You should have seen it.
At the Pride parade on Sunday, we were passing out Blow Pops to the audience. Before the parade started, I was enjoying a delicious Blow Pop while chatting with Gina and Bill. When the sucker was out of my mouth, a tiny gnat landed on it and it got stuck. I remarked that it was gross and I didn’t want the lollipop any longer. Gina, of course, was in total agreement. Bill got irritated and told me to just flick it off and finish the sucker. I didn’t want to do that because once food is touched by a bug, then it should be thrown out. Ask Gina. She understands. After that, Bill grabbed my sucker and flicked the bug off. I still didn’t want it because the bug had been squashed in the removal process. There were bug guts on my Blow Pop. I think Bill was fairly annoyed by this time. He said, “God, you’re just like my kids!” and grabbed the sucker, jammed it into his mouth, slurped on it, and then handed it back. “There,” he said. “Now it’s clean.”
I thanked him, and then continued to enjoy my lollipop. That’s my story of Bill Allred sucking bug guts off of my Blow Pop at the Pride parade.
