Yikes!
The whole story about the alleged behavior of the guy who ran a Flix Club store is more disturbing than the nonsense I wrote about in my book, RATED F. I won’t go on and on about it on this page, but if you haven’t read my social satire about places like Flix Club, then please go to http://www.junkfiction.com

Smells like fire!
Thanks to Annmarie for stealing a brick from the DV8 rubble and bringing it to X96. Through the odor of the structure fire, I can still smell cigarette smoke from the X96 nights I used to DJ. DV8 was an institution for us Generation X folks.

:(
This was the scene at 115 South West Temple last night at about 5:45pm. I had to see the very last of the old Club DV8 building as they tore down the still-smoldering structure. I stopped on my way home last night and walked along West Temple to watch as crews leveled the charred remains of DV8. Note the gray building to the right of the rubble. Our studios were on the second floor of that building from 1994-1999.

Nothing but memories...
It was the cool place in Salt Lake from about 1989 until the late 90’s. So many great bands played the tiny stage at DV8. So many memories of spinning vinyl in the DJ booth that overlooked the quaint dancefloor. And now it’s gone forever. Many of us had our first legal alcholic beverages at DV8. I remember how the crowd would go nuts when I played “Unbelievable” by EMF and “Firewoman” by The Cult. When I worked at KJQ and first turned 21 I was so excited to get to DJ KJQ night at DV8. They’d pay me $100 in cash to haul mt crates of records and CD’s up the rickety ladder to the DJ booth and play great alternative music all night long. You could never go wrong with Vicious Pink or New Order. The stage was graced by performances from Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Gravity Kills, Henry Rollins, X, Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, and about every band from the 90s. Goodbye to the sticky floors, the dusty DJ booth, the perpetual stench of stale beer in the carpet, the fond memories of Club DV8.

They have made monster movies cool again!
Before you read my thoughts on CLOVERFIELD, please note that my inner-child is a 12 year old boy who used to stay up past midnight to watch Godzilla movies. In that regard, not much has changed.
I remember the excitement I had ten years ago when Godzilla was released ... remember the updated version set in New York? And it sucked. I was disappointed. How can you go wrong when making a monster movie? There’s not much required in the plot. Yet they made one of the worst movies ever.
Thankfully, the makers of CLOVERFIELD delivered a gem. They found an excellent way to tell a monster-attacking-New York tale. The filming is very much like The Blair Witch Project, but this film actually shows you the monster (but not too much) and had a decent budget for special effects. I loved it. There are still many unanswered questions about the monster’s origin and how the film ends. No clear conclusion is really provided. But allow me to speculate ... at least on the monster’s origin. I suspect that it was a military experiment gone awry. The film does not openly divulge any of this, but there are what I consider to be clues. First of all, the title of the film. Nobody knows what it means. But it sounds like goverment nicknames for top secret experiments and weapons development. In World War II, the name given to the creation of the nuclear bomb was The Manhattan Project. Is there any ironic twist to this...since Manhattan is pretty much destroyed in the movie? And the presence of military in the area in response to the monster attack seemed rapid, and they quarantined certain people (you’ll see why in the movie.) It seemed like the military arrived with some basic understanding of what they were battling. Again, none of this is spoon-fed to the audience but this is my theory at least. Given JJ Abrams’ involvement as the film’s producer (he is also involved with the TV series LOST) you can see why I speculate that there are many unanswered questions about the movie.
Go see it!

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008 @ 2:03PM
I hurt my back on Sunday lifting my vaccuum like an idiot. It's been unpleasant for the past few days, but it feels better now. Remember with me now...what your father taught you..."Lift with your legs, not your back." The older I get, the more all that crap my dad said seems to be true. Although my dad always yelled at me to turn the music down. Ha! I showed him! I got a job playing music! todd's ipod 10:20 "Mother Mary" Foxboro Hot Tubs (Green Day in disguise) 1:20 "Death of a Martian" Red Hot Chili Peppers

Meow!
Sometimes you need a picture of a kitty. Maybe you’re having a crappy day at work--like I am--and only a kitty can make you smile. This is Tyger. She’s about 6 months old and when she’s not going crazy running around my house, she likes to relax in front of the fridge where the motor sends out a pleasant breeze of warm air. Ahhh...to be a kitty…

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Monday, January 14th, 2008 @ 1:52PM
Because killer robots rule!
I watched the new Fox series last night based on the Terminator movies and it was actually decent. Whenever you take a great movie and make a TV series out of it there is a huge risk of messing it up tremendously, but Fox went in with their guns blazing (literally) to serve up the kind of action that Terminator geeks like me want! The acting is good, the action is excellent, the script is ... well ... adequate. And they kept it violent, even daring to have a shooting scene in a high school, which is ballsy in a post-Columbine world. The “female” Terminator sent to protect John Connor reminds me a little bit too much of Small Wonder, but she takes a bullet and knows how to kick some robot ass, so I can forgive her stiff acting.
Tonight they’re showing the second installment, so we’ll see how it holds up.

If you watched my show online on our video feed yesterday, you probably noticed I was wearing a tie and a sweater. I only wore it to be a nerd; I thought I looked like the year 1985. But everyone kept asking what I was dressed up for. Imagine the reaction I’d get if I wore a dress. Hmm...maybe I’ll have to try that at some point.
