Meet The X96 Maverik Big Ass Show Bands today!
Saturday, September 27th, 2008 @ 7:06AM
Courtesy of Graywhale!
Graywhale will have a signing tent today on the north plaza of USANA Amphitheater where you can meet your favorite band (if time permits because they have to follow a schedule since many of the bands are getting on flights after they play to head elsewhere.) But a schedule is available by texting the word GRAYWHALE to the number 79640.
Remember that tickets are $25 today at Smith’s Tix or the door. This will be the last big concert of the summer so let’s party!

The X96 Maverik Big Ass Show is tomorrow!
And I’m here at 6 am on Friday morning helping to build it! I drive a mean forklift!

What follows is an exceprt from my new novel "Blogs of Wrath" that I co-authored with a brilliant young nerd named Zack Shutt. The book is free to download at http://www.blogsofwrath.com. Today is Zack's birthday, so happy birthday to him! (The book--as you might detect from the title--is written as a blog with each chapter depicted as a daily blog entry.)
September 25
So you’ll never guess what I did today. Never. It actually started last night. I got home
from school and was messing around on the Internet looking at stuff on eBay and
Amazon when the phone rang. It was Tim. He totally wanted me to spend the night—
which I was completely down with—and hang out with him most of Saturday. But no.
Not just hang out, go to this big huge concert where all these different bands were
playing. It’s called the Big Ass Show and it’s put on by this radio station called X96.
You don’t need to even wonder if I accepted his invitation.
The best part was that my dad was cool with the whole idea. I made sure to ask him
when mom was in the same room because I figured that he sort of understands where I’m
coming from lately. Plus, mom seems … I don’t know. Preoccupied by something? It’s
hard to tell. He even gave me fifty bucks to buy a ticket and have some spending money.
(I have a funny feeling that the thick green lawn has a date with me and the lawnmower
for the rest of my life as a result of the payment, but I won’t complain.) This is much
better than sitting at home on a Friday night and then doing much the same thing on
Saturday.
Tim lives next door to our old house. It’s creepy, sort of, seeing my former yard, my
former bedroom window, and the front door I used to run in and out of without a care in
the world. If I went there now, I’d have to knock. Looking at it made me feel sad, so
when we were goofing around outside I sort of turned my back to it.
We had to get in line early Saturday morning for concert tickets, so we didn’t want to
stay up too late. But at eleven thirty we started to get hungry. It’s funny how stuff we
used to do all the time now feels like something you’d do when on vacation. Like
walking up 1500 South in Woods Cross to the 7-11 for nachos and Slurpees late at night,
this was the sort of thing we did almost every night in the summer ever since fifth grade.
Staying up all night, guzzling Slurpees, belching at the tops of our lungs sleeping outside
on Tim’s trampoline, daring each other to run out in the middle of the street to take a leak
in the heart of the night—this used to be my whole life. Now it’s a premeditated event.
Having dad drive me to Tim’s house, having him remind me to mind my manners and to
be careful and to call him if I need anything made it feel less like hanging out with Tim in
the old neighborhood and more like this big planned-out event. I wouldn’t be surprised if
he set up the whole thing. He’s friends with Tim’s dad, and I could totally picture him
saying something like, “Carl is having a rough time. I wonder if the boys should spend
some time together.”
If he did, oh well. Hanging with Tim was a blast. And the concert? Holy crap. We saw
Papa Roach, Yellowcard, Reel Big Fish (a personal favorite of mine), Rufio, this one
punk band with a chick with pink hair on vocals—I forget their name, and a bunch of
others. Oh yeah, AFI was there. Those guys kicked butt. I’ve never seen such a wild
show. There were thousands of kids there, but the best part was hanging with Tim all
day.
When it was over we met the bass player from AFI and one of the dudes from Reel Big
Fish. I can’t believe that rock stars are actually nice to people. By the time Tim’s dad
picked us up, we were tired and sweaty and I had to go home. It’s only 9:45, but I’m
beat. I need to take a shower.

My review of BURN AFTER READING.
Monday, September 15th, 2008 @ 11:58AM
It was awesome!
Ethan and Joel Coen brought us the Academy Award winning NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, and they’ve followed that up with something considerable different. Different...but still in many ways pure Coen. BURN AFTER READING features an all star cast including John Malkovich, George Clooney, and Brad Pitt. Whenever Brad Pitt is on the screen I found myself laughing. In fact, I was laughing through the whole movie. I love dark comedies, and this one was right on. It’s damn near as good as FARGO. Go see it if you like the Coen brothers’ films.
