It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Deftones, but they have a new album entitled Diamond Eyes coming on May 18, 2010.  Personally, I can’t wait. I love these guys.  They have a new song available for free as well. Just click on this link.

More about Blogs of Wrath.

Blogs of Wrath written by Zack D. Shutt and me is continuing to gain recognition, which is no easy feat in a literary community dominated by mega-bestsellers like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and that stuff that Stephenie Meyer writes.  Zack and I love all the support you’re giving us.  Let me illustrate how we stand in the literature business by breaking it down in terms of music and concerts.  If Stephenie Meyer and J. K. Rowling are the two big bands in the Warped Tour, then Zack and I are the band playing on top of a rusty van parked at the curb of North Temple in front of the 7-11.  (This scenario would put Stephen King somewhere in the upper rooms of the Wells Fargo building, with full run of the upper floor.)

Anyway, we are always happy to report what we are able to acocmplish.  Blogs of Wrath is now listed and endorsed by Boys Read.  See more about them at http://www.boysread.org. Here is their mission statement: Our mission is to transform boys into lifelong readers. We are an organization of parents, educators, librarians, mentors, authors, and booksellers. This is part of what they said about Blogs of Wrath. “This book is for ages 12-24. Many boys will identify with this cutting-edge theme. Congrats to Todd Noker and Zack Shutt for their vision and commitment to bring a rare and raw story to life for reluctant male readers.”

We're legal!

Eighteen years ago it began.  Well, to be honest, it began back in the early 80s.  There were many alternative rock stations that existed and were then relocated along the dial to various signals—some no longer exist—and various cities along the Wasatch Front.  That story is another blog entry for another day, or even a book.  I’ll have to write the entire history of alternative (or modern) rock in Utah one of these days.  But let us stick with the story of KXRK.

I joined the roving nomads of alternative music in August of 1988 when it was parked at KJQ in Ogden and could be heard on a staticky network of low power translators that often went off the air (95.5 in Ogden, 92.7 in Salt Lake, and 104.9 in Provo.)  Our un-official slogan at the time was “KJQ ... three frequencies, confusing as hell.  I was just a teenager and was thrilled out of my mind—Bill Allred hired me, that in itself was pure excitement.  KJQ struggled along until a change in ownership took place, and the new owners had foolish intentions about how the station should sound. Everyone who could resign did, which resulted in nearly 90% of the entire staff quitting abruptly in December of 1991.

Acme Broadcasting was slapped together with a couple of wise investores (James Facer and Jim McNeil) who saw the potential of what could be accomplished by a bunch of misfits playing weird music from bands with funny haircuts. Acme Broadcasting leased what was then KZOL 96.1 FM located in a rundown building in a horse pasture in the western part of Provo. I moved from Hooper to Provo, lived in BYU approved housing, and joined the team to put X96 on the air. I’m quite certain that it was Thursday, February 13th at 12:01 AM when we took control of the radio station. The first day was nothing but Depeche Mode, and none of the air staff spoke on the air until the following Monday. Behind the scenes, we were still scrambling to put the station together.  After the full day of Depeche Mode, we followed with a day of The Cure, U2, and REM (not necessarily in that order, my memory is a little fuzzy) culminating in a full launch of the station on Monday, February 17th.  My first shift was 6 PM to midnight, and we were thrilled to give our audience what we knew they wanted. The old KJQ tried to stay on the air without us, but it eventually died in less than a year. The new owner of KJQ even filed a lawsuit against me, claiming that the name “Todd Nuke ‘Em” belonged to them and that I had no right to use it on X96.  The case was eventually dismissed for two reasons.  It was bull-crap, and the owner stopped paying his bills to his lawyer.

We’ve gone through a few changes in the last eighteen years, but in a world where radio stations come and go, we are indeed fortunate to still be on the air today.  Every February, it sort of hits us by surprise that the anniversary of X96’s birth approaches.  We could make a big deal about it and pat ourselves on the back for being a massive success, but we don’t really say much about it.  That is mostly because we’re busy doing what we do—there is a lot of work behind what you hear on the radio.  I think, though, the biggest part of it is that we are only here because you like what we do.  If we didn’t have loyal listeners, this little radio experiment would have fizzled a long time ago.  Somehow, I’ve been lucky enough to be associated with the best radio station in Utah for eighteen years.

We drive a short bus. Our mascot is a rabid “corporate rat.” Our morning show in conservative Utah is Radio From Hell, and Kerry, Bill, and Gina do things that make traditional broadcasters wince. Our evening host, Corey O’Brien, plays nothing but your requests all night.  Eighteen years, man.  You wonder how it still exists, sometimes.  But it does. Thanks to you.

I’d love to continue to wander down memory lane, but it’s Saturday morning and the beagle is barking to go outside.  I totally owe each and every one of you a piece of birthday cake.  cool smile

People suck.

One of my Facebook friends awakened to find his Honda stolen this morning. That totally sucks.  So keep on the look out for Joey’s car.  Here is a link with more information about his car and his neighbor’s car that was also stolen last night in the Murray area.

If you see it, call the cops. Let’s catch the sons of bitches that stole it!
