Another movie review by todd nuke 'em.
Steve Carell, it turns out, is a brilliant actor with depth far beyond anything we’ve seen in his other attempts at motion pictures. He’s brilliant on The Office--easily one of the best shows on TV--but that role tends to limit his ability as an actor. Watching him in Dan In Real Live, you get to see the different layers in his skill as an actor. There are a few dramatic parts of the movie that he carries flawlessly. Of course the film contains plenty of laughs and he is one of the best comedy actors working today. And despite the overall cheesy nature of this romantic comedy, I truly enjoyed it. I mean let’s be serious, folks. Any romantic comedy will contain high levels of cheese, but writer and director Peter Hedges keeps the characters and plot off the beaten path enough that the quirks more than make up for the predictability of a film of this genre. As he demonstrated in Pieces of April, Hedges knows how to show how silly family events and trips truly are. Let’s face it: our families are a little insane.
