Movie review: AWAY WE GO.

Four stars!
We went to see the new Sam Mendes film “Away We Go” last night and I really liked it. First, the script is very strong—it almost has to be since it came from Dave Eggers (who wrote one of my favorite books “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius”) and his wife Vendela Vida. Although the show is ultimately sweet, there are several comedic moments, and several moments that elicit uncomfortable laughter. (When you go to the movie, the opening scene is a fine example of the latter.) Director Sam Mendes learned the art of making dark comedy in “American Beauty” and he follows it up nicely with this film. Excellent performances from John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph prove that these two are talented beyond what we’ve seen from them in their TV comedies.
This film is truly left of center and will make mainstream audiences squirm a little. But I loved it!
