Corey O’Brien’s Community and Concert Calendar | Week of August 3rd

Every Wednesday morning at 9, Corey O’Brien (x96, 7p to midnight) joins Radio From Hell to keep you from sitting home.

Have an event coming up? Submit it at using the form at the bottom of this post and Corey may feature it.

Wednesday 8/3

•Miike Snow at The Depot

Miike Snow, the band so nice it got tow I’s! My personal favorite will always be “Song to No One” and how can you not love “Animal” and all the millions of it’s remixes, but there is plenty of good from this Swedish trio than those two tracks for you to sit home on a Wednesday night.

Purchase Tickets

•7th Annual Pig Roast at The Green Pig

This animal sacrifice is purely for the carnivores! Fire roasted pig served until 9pm with no cover, but it’s bound to pack out, so show up early! Trivia with trivia mistress, Eve. This bash happens to coincide with The Green Pig’s 7th anniversary, so come eat, sing and dance on the ashes of the old Cabana Club, chow down and drink up.

Thursday 8/4

•Twilight Concert Series: Diplo

I am already calling this the biggest show on the Twilight roster. You’ll either hear that as, “Oh hell yes!!!” or “I don’t want to deal with the crowd.” That’s just the two type of people there are when it comes to Twilight, but for $5. A lot of people (14 year-olds) will appreciate his work with the Biebs, but I was always fond of his work with the late Nicky Da B. Watch the vid and you’ll be happy you went to the Chinese Gourmet for lunch.

•Pato Banton at The Royal

The only reggae song that matters outside of Bob is “Don’t Sniff Coke.” At least, as far as this white kid from Utah is concerned. Also, I don’t do either, but I love the beat…like most white kids from Utah.

Friday 8/5

•Salt Lake Fringe Festival

I’ve been seeing notices for this even all over my Facebook feed and I assumed it was just a last weekend deal, but I suppose it’s rockin’ along this weekend as well. It’s the second annual and the organizers have broken it down like this: “The Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival (GSLF) is one big party where national and local performing artists come together to showcase original works! As if that wasn’t already enough fun, we’ve planned two huge opening and closing night parties! All you need is a Fringe Tattoo, available at any box office for $5, to get in! Don’t worry, we made it waterproof in case you want to shower! The festival takes place over 8 days (July 29-31 & August 3-7) and will feature 250 shows put on by 50 companies, all available for you to see for only $10 a show with a Fringe Tattoo! Here’s the best part! All artists receive 100% of the ticket sales. Talk about supporting the arts, right?”

Just to show you I support more than places that serve liquor, beer or BBQ, here’s something for the whole family. Head up the Capital Hill and take in a movie under the stars. This week they are screening “Minions.” It’s free, on the front lawn of the cap and seating begins at 7p, so get there early for a good spot. There will be food available as well.

•Demolitian Derby

Boom, crash, watch out! Hit up the Summit County Fairground the most raw of the raw: man and machine vs. man and machine. This is Utah, so buy your tickets because these things always sell out, even when there’s a chance you could end up in the hospital with a windshield wiper through your thorax.

•Mike Posner at Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater

Up to Park City you go for some Sunday Night Dancing with producer/DJ, Mike Posner who has worked with Biebs (who hasn’t?) and Maroon 5 (who’s that?). Take refreshments and be on your very best behavior. I know it’s a Sunday night, but it’s summer and YOLO and whatever excuse you need to go live a little. Plus, Deer Valley is pretty much Ibiza.

•9th Annual Zombie Walk

Having “Walking Dead” withdrawal? Can’t wait to see who Negan drops with that spiked-up bat? Me either, but it’s Sunday and you’ll feel soulless and dead enough on Monday, so get out in front of it with a walk in downtown Salt Lake with the walking dead. It’s in conjunction with Salt Lake Comic Con, so it’s legit and all ages. Bring a grocery bag full of food to earn a FREE Thursday ticket to Salt Lake Comic Con 2016 in September. The meetup has yet to been announced, but it’s free.
