The Orphanage (El Orfanato) and other movie stuff.

I need to go to the movies more often.

I saw this film, The Orphanage, last Saturday night.  It’s a Spanish made ghost story that is about as scary as the come.  Part of what makes it so frightening is that the story is so sad and pathetic.  I can’t imagine that this movie won’t scare the crap out of you and move you as well.  The woman who plays the lead, Belen Rueda, gives a very strong performance.

Without her, The Orphanage would not be as gripping as it is.  The last two scenes of the movie were maybe not necessary.  The whole movie is so downbeat that the director seemed to think we needed a couple of moments of relief at the end.  I’m not so sure that he shouldn’t have let it end on a grim note.

I’m going to make an effort to see more current movies in the near future.  I get so far behind though.  I still haven’t seen No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood.  My goal is going to be a movie a week in 2008.

Thanks for listening, Bill.
