Boner Candidate #1: BIG TOUGH HUNTER

An American hunter who impaled a black bear in Canada with a custom-made spear before leaving the animal to die has disgusted wildlife and animal activists — who charged the killing as inhumane. Josh Bowmar — a physical trainer from Ohio — was on a hunting trip in an area near Edmonton, Alberta, in May when he hurled a spear fashioned with a camera about 40 feet into a bear rummaging for food in a trash can. Bowmar didn’t retrieve the animal’s body from the woods until the following day because it was dark and raining, he told the CBC — but claimed the bear had “died immediately.” Bowmar told the Edmonton Journal he eats every animal he hunts. delight — during which he cradles the bear’s head in his hands while laughing –- Alberta’s Ministry of Environment and Parks said they would introduce a ban on spear hunting.

Boner Candidate #2: IN EGYPT WE WILL NOT TOLERATE FAT NEWS

Most Egyptian journalists have had to watch their tongues and tone down their reporting over the past three years to keep their jobs under a military-dominated government. Now, the state is ordering some women working as television anchors to practice a similar restraint with their weight. Earlier this week, Safaa Hegazy, the director of state-run Egyptian radio and television, barred eight anchorwomen from appearing on the air for a month, saying they were overweight, the state-owned Al-Ahram news website confirmed. Ms. Hegazy ordered the women to go on a diet during their suspensions, Al-Ahram said. Khadija Khatab, one of the eight anchorwomen, said that she had not yet been formally notified of Ms. Hegazy’s order, but added that she was recently told that “measures will be taken against” those who fail to lose weight by mid-September, according to an interview she gave to a privately owned television station.

Boner Candidate #3: THE SOUL OF FRANCE REQUIRES THAT YOU SHOW A LITTLE SKIN

The debate is now so heated in France that one could be forgiven for assuming that the burkini — the full-body bathing suit worn by some Muslim women — had invaded French beaches. Five towns have banned them. Three more are in the process of doing so. Prime Minister Manuel Valls supported the prohibitions on Wednesday, calling the garment part of “the enslavement of women.” In fact it would be challenging to spot a burkini on most French beaches, and even some of the mayors considering the bans admit to never having seen one. But with a presidential election approaching next year, and the nation palpably on edge after a series of terrorist attacks — including 85 people killed this summer along the French Riviera — the burkini has become a new dividing line in France’s increasingly fraught relationship with its Muslim population, Europe’s largest.
