Reflections on Amatuer Night.

Everyone, including Chris Vanocur, has asked me about the “no membership’ law repeal. My siple statement is….be carful what you wish for. We all know, down the road, DABC will want to take something. This is, after all, how local politics works. Give and take. So the question is, what right will we have to give up for this small ‘shiney keys’ right. Also, yes I was out on July first to ‘celebrate’ our ‘independance’. I called it amatuer nite, and I stand by that statement. Last nite was no different from St.Pats, Cinco de Mayo or New Years. Its when the amatuers came out. Hopefully I will see you out again, when its not a ‘special’ occasion. Just swipe your ID in the machine and have a seat. Mr Orwell will be right with you.

I completely agree with you. It is a sad statement though that when given something from the legislature, we know to keep one eye open for what they will take away.
My prediction for bars in the near future is this. With private club membership revenue gone they will have to do something to recoup their losses. Look forward to drink prices skyrocketing and being comparable to those in other states where a decent rum and coke costs $8.00. That is when I will go to the liquor store and buy my favorite spiced rum for the mere price of $7.99. Then I will go home and hang out with my dogs and have a nice evening. Oh and I can smoke too.

I went out on “Amatuer Night” like a lot of folks. My friends and myself organized a pub crawl that inlcuded a lot of the joints on and near Main Street. One of them took us to “The Red Door.” Wow. I could not believe how rude they were. 8 people rolled in that place and ordered some high-end booze and Chet (of X96 fame) and Dustin, the bartender, could barely be bothered to make us feel welcome. I know that we probably are not the clientele that they typically cater to, but we doubled the number of people in that place. Was our money not green enough? Were we not welcome because we weren’t orginally ‘members’? Even without memberships, I seriously doubt I’ll ever go back there.
