David Bowie’s Role In Labyrinth Cost Him Role In Lord Of The Rings

One of David Bowie’s more iconic on-screen roles saw the late singer staring as the Goblin King in 1986’s Labyrinth. You’d think that after such a performance, directors would be lining up to cast The Thin White Duke again, but no. Rumor had it that filmmakers wanted Bowie to play the Elf King in the Lord of the Rings trilogy but casting director Amy Hubbard claims he said he was “far too busy”.

Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh admit the studio killed the idea, telling the site, “There was a little hesitancy there because Elrond and the Goblin King. I mean, you know, elves.”
