Fresh X: The National “Day I Die”

A good song for self-doubt

Though you could say the same about anything we’ve heard at this point from The National’s “Sleep Well Beast” out on September 8th. The song starts out with sounds like U2’s The Edge on a guitar shred of hope that’s quickly put down like a cigarette snuffed out on a potted plant’s pot with the lyrics “I don’t need you / I don’t need you / besides I barely see you anymore / and when I do its seems like your only half way there.” Happy stuff. I am glad this is a Fall album.

That’s the magic of The National: I can’t tell if they encourage me to fall in love or just hate myself all day. If you make love to this I hope your last name is Montague or Capulet.
