A pair of hikers have been rescued after getting lost in the New Zealand wilderness for 18 days. On May 9th, Jessica O’Connor and Dion Reynolds entered Kahurangi National Park – famous for being one of the filming locations for the Lord Of The Rings movies – for a five-day hike. Nine days later, a friend reported them missing.

On Wednesday, the hikers were spotted by a search helicopter that saw smoke from their campfire. They had gotten lost in fog and then injured in a fall. The hikers had run out of food for “quite some time” but were in “good spirits”, officials say.
