Corey O’Brien’s Community and Concert Calendar | Week of October 12th

Every Wednesday morning at 9, Corey O’Brien (x96, 7p to midnight) joins Radio From Hell to keep you from sitting home.

Have an event coming up? Submit it using the form at the bottom of this post and Corey may feature it.

•Metro Station at In the Venue

Yes, it is the band of Miley Cyrus’ brother and yes, we used to play “Shake It” all the time.

•Utah Jazz vs. Pheonix Suns

Yes, it’s already basketball time again and yes, it’s a preseason match. As you can tell from the video below, we’re doing very well against the Suns, so go root on the Jazz and get the morale going strong into the season. And drink beer.

•St. Lucia at The Depot

St. Lucia, also known as Jean-Philip Grobler,  is a South African-born, Brooklyn-based musician and is certainly know for his remixes of Passion Pit, Foster the People and more. Come out and dance to the infectious sounds of St. Lucia when their tour in support of their new album, Matter, hits. BAIO will also perform – who’d you know as a member of Vampire Weekend.d

•Slaughter at Sandy Station

Mark Slaughter continues to flllllyyyyyyy, flllllyyyyyyy into Sandy Stationionon…and to the angels. Though, it’s on Slaughter’s website, but I can’t find any details on anything for Sandy Station, so maybe it’s happening – maybe not.

•Radio From Hell’s Not Safe For Work Mixer at The Ruin

Sugarhouse is on the move with lots of new places to eat and meet your Tinder or Bumble date. Well, we don’t want to be left out of a good party so Radio From Hell is throwing a Sugarhouse social at The Ruin. You need to RSVP because space is limited and you must be 21 and over because of the law.

•Cute is What We Aim For at Kilby Court

For those of you not at the age of libating legally, you can head to Kilby Court for some serious Hot Topic hot rock with Fueled By Ramen heartthrobs.

•Weber State University’s Drag Charity Ball

This year’s drag show will be the culmination of the 2nd annual Weber State LGBTQ Pride Week, hosted by and featuring performances from the Imperial Rainbow Court of Northern Utah, this charity event will be raising funds to benefit Youth Futures, a shelter for homeless youth. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted and attendees are encouraged to bring cash to tip the performers, with all funds given going to benefit Youth Futures. Weber State University Davis Campus, Building 3 Ballroom (2750 University Park Blvd., Layton). Sponsored by Weber State LGBT Resource Center, Weber State Diversity and Inclusive Programs, Imperial Rainbow Court of Northern Utah, and the Wildcat Gender and Sexuality Alliance.

•Warren Miller’s “Here, There and Everywhere” at Abravanel Hall

The perfect thing to get you ready for the season. “It’s been 67 years since original ski film pioneer Warren Miller Entertainment picked up a camera to capture the beauty that is skiing. In this year’s film, see Warren Miller himself as he spins tales of winters past as only Warren can do, and travel across the globe to locations like Greenland, the Swiss Alps, Kicking Horse, B.C. and more” premiering at Abravanel Hall and then on to other places all across Utah.

The Bee at Church & State

If you’ve ever caught The Moth Radio Hour while driving home on a weekend evening, then you get the idea behind The Bee. This is one of the hottest tickets in Salt Lake with shows selling out as soon as they go on sale. “Join us for an evening of lovingly competitive storytelling! Ten storytellers picked at random from a hat have five minutes each to tell us a true story on the theme of the night without notes. The theme of the night this time is Church & State, stories of religion and belief, politics and society, and the conflicts that arise when they intersect (or don’t). Bring your friends. Have a drink. Laugh. Cry. Bee entertained. 6pm Doors. 7pm Stories. 18+ event. $13 Tickets. Musical guest Rocky Lavoie will serenade us before stories and during intermission.”

•Salt Lake Comic Con Halloween Party

Costume party season is upon us and you need to get more use out of the Harley Quinn cosplay. It’s an 18 and over party with a 21 and over bar area, so you’ve got that going for you.

•Ani Difranco at The Depot

Once your friends stopping making Lilith Fair and Birkenstock jokes (ugh), get your tickets. She’s always been a great artist and always been great live. This will be a great Saturday night out. She’s touring on her new album, Allergic To Water performing with guest Chastity Brown.

•The Salt Lake City Ultimate Wine Run

It’s SOLD OUT, you drunkards!!! “The Ultimate Wine Run is a highly anticipated & adventurous event held at the most beautiful vineyards and venues throughout the country. Our Race Day Run & Party includes an amazing 5k run or 1k walk through an awe-inspiring vineyard or venue with lots of wine & fun festivities for you & your entire family. The evening will be packed with surprises. Not to let the cat out of the bag, but some of the activities that will be on the itinerary are: a rocking live DJ, a dance floor, amazing food trucks, intriguing, fun rides; So get ready to ride the bull with our mean mechanical bull ride, a rock climbing wall & more. Oh yes, and lots of wine – wine – wine – and more wine. Have we tickled your fancy yet? I hope so because this is going to be the funnest 5k run ever & the livest party of the year! Bring all of your friends & family, lawn chairs & blankets & take a moment to experience an epic evening you’ll never forget.”

•Royal Bliss Costume Party at The Royal

“Royal’s Bliss Halloween Costume Party with special guests Jack Wilkinson Band, Vagablonde, and Tim Mcnary. Tickets available at The Royal.” Did I mention these cats just got back from opening up for Lynard Skynard. BAM!

•Real Salt Lake vs. Sporting KC

It’s their last home game of the season before they make their way to the playoff and go for the MLS Cup. Kickoff is at 3pm, but get there early for Carnival Real and all the festivities. Get your red on, be loud and get out to enjoy a full 90.

•Grouplove at The Complex

Grouplove, Big Ass Show alumni, return to Salt Lake, touring off their new album, “Big Mess.” Perfect f’n Monday!

•The Trail Running Film Fest Tour at Brewvies

“Three hours of some the best films from the three-day Trail Running Film Festival in Seattle are now traveling to 30+ cities around the United States and Canada, via The Trail Running Film Festival’s Fall 2015 North American Tour.  With a dozen films it’s an evening packed with the latest and greatest full-length and short films showcasing the challenges, beauty, and inherent community in the world of trail running, with films from world-class filmmakers taking the audience on a virtual run through forests, up mountains, beyond emotional obstacles, and across the finish line. It’s guaranteed to be a night filled with friends, fun, and endless inspiration.” Certainly a Seattle thing. Here’s a sample of what you’ll be getting into. It looks exhausting just watching it to me.

•Death From Above 1979 & Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at The Depot

This could be the best show Salt Lake gets this year. Last time DFA1979 were here they played at Urban Lounge and it was perfect chaos. COREY O’BRIEN RECOMMEND OF THE WEEK!

•Indigo Girls at Park City Live

Ani Difranco and the Inigo Girls in one week?!? We truly do live in Zion.

•Of Montreal at Urban Lounge

My heart certainly is pained by the fact that DFA1979 and Of Montreal have to be on the same night. Straight outta Georgia, I can’t really put into words what your eyes will see at an Of Montreal show because it’s always different and art and a big, beautiful mess – another solid show.

That’s it for this week. I am all out of Ghost Rider White IPA, so I’m off to play Overwatch while you all plan your week. I hope this helped.
