German Police Baffled by Discovery of Hamster DNA

Police in Berlin, Germany say they’re baffled by the contents of a box discovered on a train in Heidelberg last week.

The Styrofoam container, which was found by the train’s conductor, contained three large vials of liquid. After testing the vials’ content, forensic specialists determined they contained DNA — from hamsters, police say.

In an attempt to determine where the DNA came from, police went public with the story over the weekend. However, no one has come forward to claim the box or identify the person who left it behind, says federal police spokesman Jan Doering.

What could someone be doing with hamster DNA? What’s the oddest thing you’ve found on public transportation?
