Science Tells Us It’s Hard to Pick Something off the Menu

The next time you are out to eat and cannot decide what you want, don’t panic! It’s not you, it’s probably their menu! Scientists know that as people we prefer choices as “one-size-fits-all” doesn’t really work. But, too many choices can be so overwhelming it is actually frustrating! A study where participants had to choose from a set of six, 12 or 24 photos of a scenic landscape for a print demonstrates this. A professor stated, “The idea is that the best out of 12 is probably rather good, while the jump to the best out of 24 is not a big improvement.”

While choices are nice and large menus seemed to be trending for a while, the smaller sized, more focused ones seem to be making a comeback. It’s really a win for you and the kitchen!
