Thief Steals Car with 4-Year-Old Inside; Returns to Scold Mother

A thief in Oregon who stole a car with a 4-year-old child in the backseat over the weekend drove back to return the child — and scold the mother for leaving her son in the car.

The incident happened Saturday when Beaverton resident Crystal Leary ran into a grocery store and left her son in the car with the engine running, police say. She hadn’t even learned her car had been stolen until the thief returned and tracked the mom down to yell at her for placing her child in danger, Leary says. The man then ordered her to take her son out of the vehicle before he drove off with it again.

“As moms, we get really busy, and we think we’re just running in for a second,” Leary says. “This is just a perfect example of letting our guards down and how terribly it could have ended. So I’m just thankful that he’s OK. It was so stupid, and I’ll never do that again.” The suspect, and Leary’s car, remain at large.
