An 87-year-old woman was evicted from her home of 71 years in Madrid, prompting protesters to flood the streets. 0014María del Carmen “Maricarmen” Abascal had lived in her apartment in the Retiro area of the city since 1956, before being removed by police. The rent started around $537 and after the building was aqquired the rent was raised to $3014 and later lowered to $1877. Her pension is only $1535 a month. for 8 years Abascal has been fighting the rent increase in court, becoming a prominent figure of the unafordable housing movement. On Wednesday, Abascal was notified to leave and given 30 minutes to pack her essential belongings. In response, several protesters were forcibly removed by the authorities from the building doorway, including being lifted by their arms and legs, per Reuters. Abascal was removed from the building on a stretcher and placed in an ambulance before she was driven away from the neighborhood. As the ambulance drove, supporters chanted “Maricarmen, you’re not alone!” and “Murderers!” On the night of the eviction, nearly 10,000 people appeared in the neighborhood to protest, chanting “Shame on you.” The Madrid City Council and Madrid mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida claimed the council and municipal services offered Abascal alternatives before the eviction, per Euronews. She allegedly rejected each offer, including placement in a residential facility, the City Hall housing department said. Abascal rejected the residential facility once more after her eviction and said she would move in with relatives.

Mary Ann McKinzy, 55, was extradited to Multnomah County on Sept. 18 after being arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service in Bakersfield, California, the Portland Police Bureau said. McKinzy was charged with second-degree murder, assault and negligent homicide in connection with the death of 75-year-old James S. Miller. According to reporting by The Oregonian, prosecutors said in court documents that McKinzy and Miller were in a relationship at the time Miller won $3,200 playing the lottery. Court documents say that Miller shared $1,700 of his $3,200 prize with McKinzy. However, she stole another $800 from him, according to court documents, which prompted Miller to “get a couple of his boys together” to find McKinzy and get his money back.

The field office team that reviewed the reported harassing calls determined they did not meet the threshold required for an FBI investigation, and no nexus to terrorism was identified. In a statement on an official FBI “Rapid Response” social media account established to tout the agency and respond to critics, Darren Cox, the senior executive who oversees the bureau’s DC office, confirmed the ousting of Burgwald and Rae, but denied the order came from Patel. “This was a personnel decision made at the Washington field office level alone based on our constant evaluation of mission needs,” Cox said. “Any suggestion otherwise is false.”
