Scholastic is pulling a new picture book about George Washington and his slaves amid objections it sentimentalizes a brutal part of American history. “A Birthday Cake for George Washington” was released Jan. 5 and had been strongly criticized for its upbeat images and story of Washington’s cook, the slave Hercules and his daughter, Delia. Its withdrawal was announced Sunday.

A Tennessee schoolteacher is facing reckless endangerment charges after police say she was found driving around town with nine children in her vehicle, including three riding in the trunk. Andria Desha James, 32, was arrested Sunday evening after police say they received a call about the disturbing sight at a Speedway gas station in La Vergne, outside Nashville.

Virginia day care teacher who turned her classroom into what a prosecutor called a “baby fight club” has been convicted on more than a dozen criminal charges. A Prince William County judge Wednesday convicted 31-year-old Sarah Jordan of Woodbridge on 13 felony and misdemeanor counts, including child cruelty, and assault and battery. She was found not guilty on four counts.

A former Taco Bell executive who was arrested and fired after a viral dash-cam video showed him attacking an Uber driver is now suing that driver for $5 million — saying the driver illegally recorded the violent incident. Ousted exec Benjamin Golden, 32, also said in court papers that driver Edward Caban, is to blame for any injuries he suffered during their Oct. 30 encounter in Costa Mesa, Calif.

A 911 operator in Broward County is accused of missing a call involving a man who fainted while she ordered her lunch. Francis Francois, a Broward emergency operator, was on the job in September placing her lunch order and apparently for co-workers too. Meanwhile, at the Clearsight Opticians in Fort Lauderdale, a man had fainted and the workers inside called 911 but got not response and no call back.
