35th Anniversary of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart"

It was 35 years ago today that the legendary Joy Division filmed the video for “Love Will Tear Us Apart.” They filmed it themselves, and it was the only proper music video the band ever made. Tragically, lead singer Ian Curtis committed suicide less than a month after the filming of this video. There is something about the desperation in Joy Division’s music that attracted me when I first heard about it back in the mid 1980s. I remember going to Pegasus in the Layton Hills Mall with my cousin and finding a 12″ single from Joy Divison. We knew that they were the predecessors to New Order, so we promptly bought the record and brought it home. This was back in the day when the Internet didn’t spit out whatever song you were curious about and when finding music meant going to a record store. I miss those days. There was something magical about flipping through racks of records, discovering new bands, or discovering an arsenal of music from your favorite bands.

But I digress.

Here is Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart.”
