Jon Smith is Straight Outta Compton? I’ll admit, its not the most obvious music choice for me. But in addition to my love for all things Alternative and Rock, I do loves me some early 90’s gangsta rap. In the 90’s, I was never cool enough to wear the Starter Jacket, or the 187 T shirts. In fact that was about the time I had my teal and purple Air Jordans yanked out of my gym locker at Bennion Jr. High.
Despite my impressive height, and fly kicks, I sucked at basketball.
I was a confusing cat to most in my Jr. High. One minute I’m passing out black and yellow X96 stickers, the next I’m sitting in HomeEc with my friend Jack talking about N.W.A. I dug Gangsta Rap for all the wrong reasons. I could care less about their politics, or their trouble with the police. I liked the beat, and I would laugh when they’d drop buckets of f-bombs on me. My cousins and I would sit in the car and listen to Too Short, Public Enemy, and Ice-T and feel like total badasses when we’d stay up late to watch Boyz-N-Tha Hood and Colors. (best movie ever btw)
It really is!
So say what you will about the rap genre as a whole, but Eazy E, MC Ren and DJ Yella, Cube and Dre, as N.W.A. remains, to this day, one of the most influential groups in music history. I was stoked last night during the grammy’s when we got a first look at an intro to the first full-length trailer for the upcoming N.W.A. movie “Straight Out Of Compton.” The intro features former N.W.A. members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre cruising around Compton reminiscing on their early days.
So grab a 9 and tip a 40, then enjoy! NSFW language in this bitch.
