Lorde's new video is intense!

I was afraid that the new video for Lorde’s “Yellow Flicker Beat” would be a three minute trailer for the new Hunger Games movie. Yes, her song is on the soundtrack, and yes, I’m excited for The Hunger Games Mocking Jay Part One, but I’m glad that the music video is letting the song stand on its own. I like Lorde. I think she is refreshing and dynamic, and I think her new song is pretty damn good. She is intense, and you can see it in the way she dances. She twists and convulses in a way that is reminiscent of Ian Curtis of Joy Division. I’m a fan of some of the darker styles of music that originated in the 80’s and 90’s, and there is something about Lorde that excites me the way Siouxsie and the Banshees used to excite me. In a world where one huge breakthrough album can be quickly forgotten, it is great to see an artist deliver a new song that is this good as her career advances. I hope her future continues to be this productive.

I’ve read all of the Hunger Games book and I’m a fan of the movies. When I heard Lorde for the first time (it was the song “Royals”) there was something about it that reminded me of Hunger Games. Maybe it was the fact that Lorde sort of reminds me of Katniss in that they are both young, powerful, and intense females. For me, “Yellow Flicker Beat” being on the new Hunger Games movie is a perfect fit. Check out the new music video below!
