Something momentous happened last night, something that no one thought would happen. Nerds everywhere sat though an entire half of NFL football to catch a glimpse of the new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This act of Disney synergy paid off as millions of people suffered through that awful football game to catch a glimpse of the new trailer, and what a trailer it was. If you still haven’t seen the new trailer, check it out below before continuing the article.
In perfect J.J. Abrams fashion, the studios managed to give us an in-depth look at the new chapter of the Star Wars saga without giving away any important plot points. Since we still have no idea what this movie is about exactly or how the original characters fit into the story, there has been a storm of speculation amongst fans since the premiere of the trailer. In this post we’ll go over what WE think is going on in the new trailer. Keep in mind that these are still just stabs in the dark, and our speculations come only from the promotional material that has been released by Disney. We also have no certainty as to what The Force Awakens will entail.
1. Our New Hero, Finn, is a storm trooper gone rogue.
In this screen shot, you can see that Finn is donning some Stormtrooper armor, and we can hear him admitting to someone “I was raised to do one thing.” We then see a Tie fighter plummeting out of space and onto what we can assume to be Rey’s home planet of Jakku. Finn follows up by saying “I’ve got nothing to fight for”. So we can see that maybe he feels he’s failed his mission of being stormtrooper of the year, and is now looking for a new mission.
It’s pretty obvious he’ll find a new destiny on this desert planet when he meets up with shipwreck spelunker, Rey. While we’re on the subject of Rey, lets take some guesses as to who she might be.
2. Rey… Skywalker?
So we know that Luke Skywalker is in the new film. This was confirmed by Disney, Mark Hamill, and J.J Abrams early on, before filming even started. Last week when Disney released the poster, people immediately took note of Luke’s absence. Once again, he is absent from the trailer, with the exception of one shot of what we can assume to be him putting his hand on his old pal R2-D2.
Why is there so much mystery surrounding Luke when we know that he’s in the story? Could it be that they’re saving him for a big reveal? Let’s get back to Rey. She’s the first character introduced in the trailer, shown exploring the ruins of an Imperial Destroyer. Once we finally get a look at her with her mask off, she’s seen walking thoughtfully through the desert, and later, tinkering with some robot or maybe a power converter. An unseen character asks her “Who are you?” to which she replies “No one”. Now we know that if you’re the main character of a Star Wars movie, you’re not just no one. The parallel’s between her character’s origin and Luke’s origin in A New Hope are too similar to ignore. Maybe the big reveal that ties Luke into the story is his reunion with his daughter. This also brings me to my next speculation.
3. KYLO REN….SKYWALKER?!?!
Okay, maybe you think I’m just making excuses for every single character in this movie to be related to Luke Skywalker, but I think I have a good case. We already know that Vader claimed the Dark Side when the loss of his mother drove him mad. We also know that there was also a possibility of Luke following the same path, being cut from the same cloth. Luckily, Luke’s anger management skills were a lot better than his father’s and he turned out okay. When primary antagonist, Kylo Ren, is introduced in the trailer, he seems to be quite a fanboy of the now deceased Darth Vader. This is implied when he looms over Vader’s destroyed helmet and utters the words “I’ll finish what you started”.
Taking my last speculation into consideration, could it be possible that Kylo Ren was the first bad seed of Luke Skywalker, and maybe he sent Rey off to Jakku while he hid in shame, hoping to keep her free of his Jedi past and influences. I haven’t read any Star Wars fan-fiction, but apparently there’s a story line that has a similar situation. So maybe Kylo has disowned his father and vowed to inherit Grandpa’s legacy.
4. Poe is a good guy, for now.
Poe Dameron seems like he could possibly be the new Han Solo-type character. Great pilot, handsome face, all around great guy. However, there are two moments in this trailer that give me the impression that he might actually be gearing up to become the baddie for the next movie.
The first moment comes early in the trailer when Kylo Ren seems to be either torturing or interrogating Poe, his reaction seems to be more anger than pain. Instead of reading Poe’s mind, is it possible that Kylo Ren might actually be using his Dark Side powers to corrupt Poe’s otherwise righteous mind? It’s not beyond the realm of possibility. Especially for the sake of this post.
The second moment comes when a piece of footage involving Poe and Finn is edited with a peculiar section of Han’s voiceover. When Poe walks by Finn on the X-Wing runway, they acknowledge each other while Han mentions “The dark side. A Jedi”. It’s obvious that Finn will be the next potential Jedi, but will Poe become the new Sith king?
5. Chewie Finally Meets His Demise
This speculations is super simple and comes from one single shot. Rey crying over what seems to be a furry body. See below.
People have been speculating that an original character would die in this installment. Chewie could be pretty expendable considering Kashyyyk is full of Wookies, honestly, they could fly by and get another one.
