A mother has been charged with leaving her 7-year-old daughter to sleep overnight in a trash bin outside a spa in Dallas, police said. Alicia Carroll of Garland was being held in the Dallas County Jail Tuesday on charges of abandoning and endangering a child. Bond for the 28-year-old woman was set at $25,000. A message left with her attorney was not returned.

An Oregon couple took it all in stride as they watched the demolition of a house they owned for nearly 30 years. Brent Merriman told the East Oregonian newspaper that he and Michele Lowary moved out of the house and rented a place across the street last year after a worker accidentally dumped 150 gallons of diesel into their basement.

A large noose was discovered hanging prominently from a tree near the student center at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. The noose is the symbol of the lynching of Black people in the “old” Jim Crow South. Anytime it is displayed, especially anonymously in the dead of night, it is a threat to the life of every Black person in the vicinity.
